Lets see where this goes

Well for some strange reason I decided to start a blog, whether it lasts or not well see. I have never posted anything online, but I guess this would be a good way for our friends and family to see what we're up to.
So where do I start, lets see.........if you get to read this blog you probably already know how we met and got married and such so we'll go ahead and skip to the present.
We just got back from a vacation in Hawaii. I had a great time and it was fun spending time with Suzanne's family and just with Suzanne in general. We toured all the major islands and did something on every single one of them. They were all fun. I guess if I had to rank the things that I did, I'll tell you the top 3:
1. Pearl Harbor and Kauai Helicopter Tour
2. Volcanoes National Park
3. Two Step Beach
I guess many of you are thinking how Pearl Harbor and a helicopter tour on arguably the most beautiful island of the chain are tied for first. I'll go ahead and explain as best as I can. Pearl Harbor has always been something that I have read about in history books, watched movies, and remembered on December 7th. Being there gave me kind of a weird feeling but at the same time it didn't. As I was there I just couldn't wrap my mind about the fact that 70 years ago that's where WWII began for the US and that even though you don't think about it much, there are still US service members that gave their lives that day within the harbor waters. Also, as I walked through there, I was trying to imagine what it must have been like being there when this happened, what the sight must have been when the Japanese planes were spotted coming over the mountains or as everything around was being destroyed. But just as I thought about all that, I also thought about all the service members and the courage  that they displayed and the fact that they never backed down even though they were caught by total surprise and in horrible strategic position. I think that's what stood out to me the most, was that even though they knew their lives could end that very moment, they fought back with everything they could and defeat wasn't even a thought in their mind. Walking around the park and the museums was a very humbling experience and one that I will never forget.
Now the helicopter tour, also a favorite. Being able to tour an island as beautiful as Kauai from the air was amazing. It was almost like seeing things as if you were in a movie or pictures from a book. The mountains, waterfalls and coastlines were all something that not many people would ever get to see, so I thought that getting to see it from that angle made me important. Although the helicopter tour doesn't have as many thoughts as Pearl Harbor, I think it was just one of those experiences that you just never forget. I know that it's hard to compare, but to me they were both equally awesome.
The other two islands were also really cool because they were things that I've never seen before. Volcanoes and a sea turtle which Suzanne thought was going to eat her. Yes, with fins and on slippery rocks Suzanne managed somehow to jump about 5 feet and still be standing. I'm still trying to figure out how she managed that! I think she had a harder time getting into the water. Two Step beach also had great snorkeling, it had great coral and also good sea life to look at and admire and it was just fun to snorkel. It was also kind of cool to sit on the rocks made from lava in the middle of the water. Now, Volcanoes National Parks was also cool to see because of the volcanoes. Now anytime anyone asks me what it would be like to be really close to a volcano, I can say "OOOHH I know, they're not that bad, they just put out a lot of steam and have a gift shop." The other part of this park that was really neat was the drive down to the coast where you could see the lava which had run down the mountain. Now that's something you'll never see here in Texas. I'll have to put up a picture to show you.
Now there were other parts that didn't make my top three, but other people on the vacation might argue that I should have added, so receiving an honorable mention is.............watching the sunrise on the top of a mountain. I know, how is that not better than looking at volcanoes? I'll tell you why, because I had wake up at 2:00 AM.  Yes, thats not a typo, 2:00 IN THE AM!!! Let's just say that I don't do well when I wake up at 2 in the morning. Although it was a very neat sight to see, and it was great seeing Eric in a bathrobe being used as a jacket, it was something that I thought was OK. I just think that it was too early in the morning to really enjoy it. But everyone else liked it so it wasn't so bad,
Overall all the sights and islands were great to see and tour, but spending time with everyone that went was the best part. Although I don't show it like I should sometimes, I had a great time being with everyone and especially spending time with Suzanne. Sometimes I don't know how she puts up with me, but she does and that's what matters to me, and she had a great time so it was all worth it.
Well, I'm getting tired of writing and I can't think of anything else to write about because of it. Until next time, whenever that might be!
